MWG 4 – LENGTH

The Metrology Working Group for Length in SIM, MWG 4, supports SIM and its member NMIs/DIs in meeting their obligations under the CIPM MRA in the fields of length and angle metrology. These technical areas play an important role throughout modern manufacturing and instrument development, indeed anywhere that parts with known dimensions, locations, or geometries are required.

Some of the activities carried out in the group are:

  • Organize regional key comparisons, supplementary comparisons, and pilot studies to demonstrate and monitor the equivalence of length measurements across SIM members as well as members of other Regional Metrology Organizations (RMOs) under the auspices of the Consultative Committee for Length (CCL).
  • Help SIM members prepare, publish, and maintain Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs).
  • Review the CMCs of other RMOs in support of the CIPM MRA.
  • Promote technical cooperation among its members through meetings, workshops, and training opportunities at various NMIs/DIs.
  • Seeks harmonization among its members through ongoing networking.
